On the far right of the panoramic picture one can see the canal that brings water to the rice terraces. These canals are built and maintained by hand. The water is distributed and managed by an ancient distribution system consisting of gates and valves all made out of wood and built by hand. All rice fields on the island, no matter where they are located, get fresh water directly from the mountains, through this ancient distribution system. An amazing feat of ancient engineering! |
