The Volcano Mt. Agung is sacred in the Balinese belief system. In fact, all mountains are sacred. That is where the Gods live. Since Mt. Agung is the highest and the most inaccessible, it is also the most sacred. That's why locals do not casually stroll up the mountain. Going to visit the God's home is not something you undertake lightly. You must be spiritually prepared for such visit and, just like visiting another person's home, you want to know that you are welcome. It is a good idea to take some offerings that you will leave on the mountain, to honor and appease the Gods. It is also a good idea to take an empty bottle with you. If you find a stream on the mountain, fill your bottle. The water from the mountain is very special: it is holy water. It is used in prayers.
