Another impressive view: Heldenplatz, the grandiose Square of the Heroes. It was created on the orders of Emperor Frantz Joseph.

As impressive as it looks today, the complex was supposed to be TWICE as big: the plan called for another palace (the west wing), to from a semicircle. But the empire fell before the project was finished. Lack of money (and lack of an emperor) after the fall of the empire left the project unfinished. This beautiful plaza teaches us a powerful lection in history: the magnificent presence of the Neue Hofburg palace, and the meaningful absence of "the palace that was never built".
